METTUPALAYAM: (52 Kms from Cbe)
This small town is just placed at the foot hills of the Nilgiris. The unique railway line between Mettuppalayam and Ooty is adventurous and joyous as it passes through green hills tea plantations and forests.
Mettuppalayam is the starting point for two of the Ghat Roads into the Nilgiri Hills. Subsequently it has established itself for the trade of fresh fruits & vegetables coming down from the hills and also for produce that grows in the plains and is destined for the hills. Fresh produce from here is supplied to most parts of Coimbatore district.
For a magnificent view of the hillside covered with forests, a train journey from Mettupalayam to Ooty is recommended. This narrow gauge mountain train winds through 46 km of forests, tea plantations, 16 tunnels, and more than 250 bridges, starting from Mettupalayam on the plains. Moving at a pace little faster than walking, the journey takes four and half to five hours, but is more compensated by stunning views. Black Thunder a water theme park located 3 km from the town that attracts many tourists.
This is the second largest hill station next to Ooty in the Nilgris. It is 19 km from Ooty. The altitude is 1839 meters above mean sea level. The climate in Coonoor is milder than Ooty. People can visit Sim’s Park, Law’s fall, Ketti Dolphin’s Nose, Lamb’s Rock, Lady Canning’s seat, The Droog, Ralliah Dam, Catherine’s fall, and some beverages plantations.
Coonoor, a beautiful and sceneric hill station of Tamil Nadu, lies in the Nilgiri Hills. Coonoor derives its name from the Coonoor hill tribe of the region. The main attraction of Coonoor is the Sim’s Park. Tea bushes, Grassy meadows, arrecknut trees, profusion of Sunflowers, Marigolds and Rhododendrons characterize Coonoor. Coonoor is basically a small tea estate town where the weather remains pleasant all through the year. Based on its relief, the town is divided into upper and lower Coonoor. Coonoor is one of the three popular hill stations in the Nilgiri Hills, the other two being Ooty and Kothagiri.
The road to coonoor is the same till Mudumalai and Masinagudi. It is another 35 km to Udhagamandalam, better known as Ooty and 18 more to Coonoor. The drive beyond Masinagudi entails 35 hairpin bends and though these are very enjoyable drives, the trouble is, everyone else seems to think so too. Watch out therefore for maniacs coming tearing down from the opposite side. Masinagudi used to be an elephant corridor. So don’t be too surprised if you do see some wild tuskers on the road. Apart from the scenic beauty of the road, the drive through Masinagudi is charming in itself.
The road between Ooty and Coonoor is quit forested with hills looming in the distance. Again, there are blind turns and you have to be very careful around the corners. Coonoor town seems as crowded as Ooty but, a little distance away from the centre of the city peace descends again. Coonoor is more charming as it has many quaint houses, old churches and not too many visitors as compared to its more famous neighbouring city. Ooty and its rolling hills give way to snarling traffic in the centre of town which is thankfully bypassed for a smooth drive on the way to Coonoor.
Ooty renamed as Udhagamandalam, is also known as “QUEEN OF HILLS” is situated on the Nilgiris (Blue Mountain) range at an altitude of 2268 meters (7,500 feet) above the Mean Sea Level. It was the summer capital of the British rulers in India. The British collector of East India Company who ruled over Coimbatore district discovered Ooty in 1882. He was none other than John Sullivan. The misty blue haze of Nilgiris and the fragrant rain forests lure millions of tourists to Ooty every year. Whether travelling by hill train or road, the scenery is breath taking. Waterfalls and wild flowers dot the countryside. The “Shola” forests which can be seen in the higher reachers are very important ecologically.
The Botanical Garden is built exactly of that of the English Style. It is a series of terraced gardens, found by Marquis of Tweed Dale in to 47. Every year the agro-horticultural show is held here during April and May and many tourists visit the flower show.

Among the tourist attractions, the Botanical Gardens established by the Marquis of Tweeddale in 1847, presents a variety of exotic and ornamental plants. Both the annual Flower Show of the Horticulture Department and the Dog show of the South India Kennel club are held here. Trout fishing is a popular sport at Avalanche, 24 Kms away from Ooty. Close by are two smaller and quieter hill resorts Coonoor and Kotagiri in the same range.
There is a lake which was built between 1823 and 1825 by the then Collector John Sullivan. One can row the boats into the lake with joy to find the green tops alongside. To go with the boating there are Lake Garden and toy train tides which influence children and older people too.
The stone house in Ooty was also built by the collector, John Sullivan. This is the first ever bungalow constructed in Ooty. Apart from these three spots there are Government Muscums, Raj Bhavan Doddabetta, Mukurti Peak, Pykara Dam and Wenlock Donons. From Ooty it is just 60 km to travel to the Mudumalai animal’s sanctuary.
This hill station too lies in the Nilgiris. This is 28 km from Ooty. This is the ancient and the oldest hill resort of the Nilgris hills. The British started their building activities early in 1819. This place too is surrounded by tea plantations.
